Inspired by the concepts behind UK Potter Matthew Warners “Social Objects”,

this four week course introduces you to slab building and hand finishing a simple vessel shape.

Matthews concepts (taken from matthewwarner.co.uk): I am interested in pots, tableware, functional objects. Tableware is interesting for me because of its indisputable link with food. 18th century porcelain production in Europe and the effects it had on dining culture and on studio pottery in the decades that followed fascinates me. The history of pottery is vast and is what inspires me. Pottery was at the heart of the industrial revolution and helped transform the way we live our lives. I want to inspire people think about these common objects and what they signify in everyday life.

Taking inspiration from Matthews concepts, we look back into our own lives to find an object or shape that holds a strong connection with our past or present lives. We take that memory of a shape and form it into a freestanding, slab built vessel in just 12 hours (4 weeks of 3 hour sessions).

During the first session you learn how to slab roll clay, cut and join together three shapes to make a freestanding form. Through discussion you come up with a design for a vessel shape which takes inspiration from your life and memories.

For the second session we visit the Contemporary Applied Arts Gallery in Southwark (Just behind Tate Modern) and see the Matthew Warner exhibition “Social Objects”

During weeks three and four we make and decorate our vessels.

The course is suitable for anyone aged 8 or older.

Fees include all materials, expert tuition, site visit and firing
