Learn how to use chiaroscuro to create the perception of depth

3 week course

As used by Leonardo Da Vinci and Carrivagio chiaroscuro literally means ‘light dark‘ and can create dramatic effects especially when darkness is contrasted with human flesh.

Join us in a studio prepared with blackout drapes and dramatic lighting to emulate this stunning effect used in painting for centuries.

Easels boards, paper, charcoals, pencils oil/chalk pastels and acrylics are provided.  You might prefer to light your board, especially with the dramatic lighting we are planning, so bring a clip on light for your personal use.

Sheila’s Top Tip: For those who have not done this before I suggest using the black paper provided and working with white pastel/chalk to build layers of light on the darkness!
