A 10-week course with a real progression

Mario takes you through the basics of drawing which enables you to discover mark-making, tone, composition, proportion, measuring, perspective and much more on our beginners’ drawing course

In the weekly 3-hour session, using pencil and charcoal, you explore a range of techniques, draw objects from life and develop a personal response to the world around you. During the course you will complete a number of practical drawing exercises aimed at building your confidence and skills step by step. You will also be inspired by classic and contemporary artists as we look at drawings throughout history.

Included in the course is a gallery visit led by Mario and an exhibition of your achievements at the end of this run – dates tbc.

Basic materials are provided and Mario will advise which materials are best for you to continue at home.

Course level: ideal for beginners; but also suitable for those who want to brush up on things like perspective.

Please note there will be no classes – Monday 23 & 30 October

About the tutor:

mario-lautier-vella-photo3Mario Lautier Vella is a cross-disciplinary artist working with drawing, collage, painting, photography, video, sound, sculpture, installation, book arts and performance and has exhibited across the UK and abroad.

His current work explores ideas around suggestion, speculation and second guessing of presence and absence, invasion and evasion, concealment, protection, surveillance, identity, intimacy and the space between our public and private lives. Snatched glimpses, fleeting images, a sensation of constant flux and an array of hybrid, multiple, morphing forms all leave their mark, creating a sense of play and evocation and allowing for further narratives and interpretations to emerge.
Graduating with a Masters degree in Art and Media Practice from the University of Westminster in 2012, Mario has been teaching since 2011 and enjoys delivering a variety of courses and workshops at City Lit and Watford Museum for both adults and children.
